Heads of State (2025)

🎬 Movie Review: Heads of State (2025)
“Saving the world… with questionable professionalism.”

Here: Watch on Netflix

Heads of State is a high-octane, buddy-action comedy that throws together world leaders, international crises, and unlikely heroes with explosive, laugh-out-loud results. Directed by Ilya Naishuller (Nobody), the film pairs Idris Elba and John Cena as a no-nonsense Prime Minister and a rowdy ex-soldier-turned-U.S. President who must team up after a global assassination plot puts both their countries—and their lives—at risk.

The film kicks off with a bang: a G20 summit gone wrong, a cyberattack, and a mysterious villain known only as “The Architect” who threatens to plunge the world into chaos. Forced into hiding and stripped of their security, the two heads of state must rely on their instincts, fists, and conflicting personalities to survive—and stop World War III. Think Air Force One meets Rush Hour, with a bit of Mission: Impossible flair.

Elba plays it straight and stoic, bringing gravitas to his role, while Cena unleashes his full comedic timing and action chops. Their banter carries the film—awkward road trips, shootouts in tuxedos, and a running gag about diplomatic immunity that never gets old. Their chemistry is gold, especially as their clashing styles evolve into respect and (reluctant) friendship.

The action is slick and satisfyingly over-the-top. From motorcades turned into warzones to parachuting out of a helicopter into the Swiss Alps, the stunts are creative and well-paced. Meanwhile, the villain subplot—with Gemma Chan as a mysterious MI6 double agent—adds intrigue without ever taking itself too seriously.

Beneath the absurdity, the movie sneaks in sharp satire about international politics, ego-driven leadership, and media manipulation. But it never lingers too long on message—this is first and foremost a popcorn-fueled thrill ride with designer suits, witty insults, and very big explosions.

Final Verdict: ★★★★☆ (4/5)
Heads of State is clever, chaotic, and surprisingly heartfelt. Elba and Cena are a powerhouse pair, the action doesn’t let up, and the laughs land more often than not. It’s diplomacy by way of demolition—and honestly, it works.
